Modern Stays in Historic Stellenbosch

Chic and stylishly decorated, Hotel Krige is Stellenbosch’s newest hotel, offering guests about every modern convenience in a central location seeped in history and tradition.

Dating back to the late 1600s, Stellenbosch was founded after the Dutch Governor of the Cape, Simon van der Stel, came upon a picturesque valley through which ran “a clear river adorned with fine and lofty trees”, whilst exploring areas north of Cape Town.

He and his party camped on a little island in the Eerste River for the evening with the governor commemorating his own name and the wealth of the natural vegetation growing there when he named the area Stellenbosch. He identified the fertile valley as an area for agriculture and within a year of his discovery farmers had begun to settle here.

Settlers flocked to the area over the next decade and in 1685 the town of Stellenbosch was officially founded.

The town’s growth continued to accelerate and expand and in the early 1800s the area that is now known as Krigeville was established. This occurred when land was allocated to a party of settlers that moved to the area from the small town of Krige in Belgium. By 1905 two ribbons of plots had been established on either side of what is now known as Krige Street. These run in a southerly direction from Dorp Street towards the Eerste River and is where Hotel Krige now lies.
